FACEBOOK BLACKOUT
Did you survive the Facebook/Instagram Blackout of 2019? Sounds like we're not safe yet.
Post from Mari Smith:
Uhoh--friends, I'm hearing of suspicious activity where people are able to log in to other users' Facebook accounts.
As a precaution, you might want to immediately do the following:
Go to settings > Security and Login:
1. Change your password. (Ideally 12-15 characters long, cryptic, upper and lower case, special characters and numbers. If you can remember your password for anything, it's not strong enough. Use a password manager!)
2. Log out of all sessions.
3. Set up two-factor authentication, if you haven't already.
4. Review your list of Authorized Logins and remove any that are no longer applicable.
5. Enable alerts about unrecognized logins. (You'll get an alert when anyone logs into your account from an unrecognized device or browser. But if you have 2FA set up, they won't be able to get in. I'm not kidding, I get multiple email alerts every day for password resets. Unreal!)
6. Set up 'Choose 3 to 5 friends to contact if you get locked out.'
I think that's it for now.
Clearly, the #FacebookBlackout2019 has wreaked a bit of havoc!! Best take control of your own account security, if you can.

FACEBOOK BUSINESS FOLDER UPDATE
Facebook Messenger update - business messages are now getting delivered to a "businesses" folder instead of direct to the inbox 😳
I see this having big implications on Chatbot message open rates.
These are not messages TO your business, these are messages you receive FROM other businesses to your personal profile now getting filed away under a "Businesses" header.
LINKEDIN INTRODUCE JOB SEEKER INSIGHTS
LinkedIn expands Job Insights to show top paying jobs in the U.S., U.K., and Canada. This is a job seeker tool which is very money motivated, but, as a recruiter, it is important to be aware of the tool. LinkedIn has also updated the Salary Calculator. Read the article here.
YOUTUBE CRACKS DOWN ON GIVEAWAY RULES
YouTube has finally figured out that YouTubers are trying to manipulate the algorithm by increasing engagement via a free giveaway. YouTube confirms (via tweet) that giveaways are OKAY... but not using a giveaway/prize to drive up a channel’s views, subscriber numbers, likes, or other forms of user engagement. Read the article here.
FACEBOOK LAUNCH LEGAL ACTION AGAINST COMPANIES SELLING FAKE FOLLOWERS
About time! Facebook is finally putting their foot down and making a stand against the type of companies where you can pay $10 and gain 200 followers on your Facebook page. So yes, Facebook has spotted the fake accounts, but now they are taking legal action against the real source. Yippee! Read the article here.
LINKEDIN LAUNCHES A PODCAST CALLED "HELLO MONDAY"
With podcasts rising in popularity, social platforms are now looking to get on board and boost their messaging in audio format.
Hello Monday will be hosted by LinkedIn senior editor-at-large Jessi Hempel. Each episode will feature an interview with someone who has found success in their field and will be supplemented with data from the network's over 600 million members. and reporting on its community from managing news editor Caroline Fairchild."
TWITTER ALSO LAUNCH A NEW PODCAST
I wonder how long it will be before Facebook launch a podcast? Twitter's new podcast for business is called Character Count. "In each episode of Character Count, we will talk to the people behind some of Twitter's most interesting advertising stories. We'll ask how they built such effective campaigns and why Twitter's influential and valuable audience matters so much to them." Read more here.
LINKEDIN ALSO LAUNCH TRENDING NEWS
You may have noticed a new section on the right-hand side of LinkedIn which is "Trending News". Or Linkedin called it "What people are talking about". I really like this idea and it is a fabulous new feature. Well done LinkedIn! Read the article here.
FACEBOOK ADDED A SECRET DARK MODE FOR MESSENGER
If you prefer a "dark mode" screen, then you are in luck! With the latest update, you can now activate the dark mode screen on Facebook Messenger. Here is how.
TWITTER JUST GAVE ITS USERS MORE OPTIONS WHEN REPORTING A TWEET
Twitter's looking to improve its response to violations of personal privacy on the platform by adding a new option for users to specify the type of personal information being shared via tweet. We now have lots of options for feedback to Twitter when reporting a Tweet. The full article is here.
YOUTUBE NOW HAS "AR MASKS" OR FILTERS ON STORIES
You can only use the stories feature on YouTube if you have 10k subscribers or more. I do wonder if they will change this in the future as this is very limiting for creators. The new feature includes "AR Masks" which are SnapChat like filters. So yes, YouTube is jumping onto the "Stories" bandwagon like everyone else. Read more and see the filters available here.
GOOGLE INTRODUCE A "PINTEREST" STYLE FEATURE ON THEIR IMAGES
This is actually very clever. With Pinterest reportedly considering an IPO for later in the year, Google has this week taken a shot at the platform's core offering by announcing a new product discovery option which will enable brands to reach consumers who are searching via Google Images. Watch out Pinterest... or did Pinterest already know this, which is why it is considering an IPO? Read more.

TWITTER - PREVIEW PROFILES WITHOUT LEAVING THE TIMELINE
I like this idea of simply tap to view the profile but you can still see your timeline. This is not yet being rolled out, but it is being tested. I hope they launch it soon as it will save lots of time. Read the article here.
LINKEDIN UPDATES RECRUITER PLATFORM
Linkedin has now updated the AI for the Recruiter platform(s) to improve the matching process.
From LinkedIn.... "Recruiters have told us they’re often frustrated by the need to jump from tool to tool. We’ve heard you. So we’ve put all of our core tools - Jobs, Recruiter, and Pipeline Builder - on a single platform. Once you create a project, you will be able to see the results from all your active sourcing channels - search results, job applicants, media leads - under the Talent Pool tab, and you can manage candidates from there." LINKEDIN FINALLY ANNOUNCE NEW GROUP FEATURES
As you may recall, last year, LinkedIn launched a re-vamp of LinkedIn Groups which aimed to restore the platform's groups functionality back to its former glory. It never happened, until now!
- Notifications for new group posts

- HIghlight relevant conversations
- Post review and approval
- Group cover images
Is this all too late? Will these features encourage you to do more with LinkedIn groups?
Read the article in detail here.

Another step in the direction of a one size fits all platform. Spotted by code hacker Jane Manchun Wong, the update would provide more ways for users to engage with Direct messages, expanding the function's usage to beyond the app alone. Read the article here.

YOU WILL KNOW WHICH FACEBOOK BUSINESSES ARE SHARING YOUR INFO!
Facebook has taken some steps to prevent companies from recklessly using your data for targeted ads, but now it might put pressure on them to come clean. As of February 28th, Facebook's "why am I seeing this ad?" button will show who (if anyone) uploaded the contact info that led to a sales pitch. You'll know if it comes straight from the source, like a retailer, or if the company relied on an outside partner to gather the data. Read more here.
IGTV IS COMING TO THE INSTAGRAM FEED
IGTV is coming to IG Feed - Now it is possible to play IGTV videos longer than 1 minute via the Instagram feed and profile. When uploading a new IGTV video just select the appropriate option.
I personally think that this may be due to the fact that no-one ever clicks on IGTV - so they are going to spread the word and put it into the regular feed. (I may be wrong!). Read the Mashable article here.
SPOTIFY ACQUIRES GIMLET MEDIA AND ANCHOR
This is Spotify's way of expanding their growth into the world of Podcasting. With these acquisitions, Spotify is positioned to become both the premier producer of podcasts and the leading platform for podcast creators. This development will certainly hurt iTunes and Sticher Radio! The Guardian article is here.
DO YOU STILL HAVE A FLICKR ACCOUNT?
Flickr announced plans to discontinue the free 1TB of storage space that was previously granted to users, restricting free users to only 1.000 photographs. Beginning Tuesday, February 5, Flickr will start deleting photos from accounts to bring them within 1,000 photos. Read the full details here.
YOUTUBE EXPANDS IT'S EXPLORE FEATURES
I am rather excited about this new development. As Google Plus comes to the end of its life we are starting to see more and more features appearing on other YouTube Channels, and YouTube is no exception. YouTube is finally giving the less popular creators a bit of a voice! Find out more here.
GOODBYE MANAGEFLITTER!
If you have been using ManageFlitter, Crowdfire or StatusBrew then your Twitter experience is about to change dramatically. Twitter has suspended these three prominent social media companies that enable clients to rapidly follow and unfollow accounts using the Twitter API. This is a popular strategy for increasing followers, but a practice that's largely seen as spammy. Read the announcement here.

FACEBOOK IS PLANNING TO MERGE WHATSAPP, INSTAGRAM AND MESSENGER
This was BIG news and even found its way to the BBC last week. It makes complete sense to merge all three instant messaging platforms and I am quite excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. It will not happen overnight, but it will be great when it happens. Read BBC news article.

SOCIAL SNIPPET SHOW | FACEBOOK GET DOWN WITH THE KIDS....
Friday Jan 25, 2019
Friday Jan 25, 2019
In this week's social snippet show we feature and chat about:-
1. FACEBOOK IS GETTING DOWN WITH THE KIDS
Over the last few years, Facebook has gone from 'cool app' to 'visual message board for family and friends', and with that shift, the platform has been gradually losing its appeal among younger audiences, with some reports suggesting that millions of teens are abandoning The Social Network entirely. Facebook is taking another step to stem the tide of teens leaving its platform with its test of LOL, a feed of memes in the form of videos and GIFs. Read more
2. LINKEDIN UNVEIL NEW ADDITIONS TO COMPANY PAGES
This week, LinkedIn has announced the addition of several new company page functions, adding to the tools it released back in November.
First off, LinkedIn has expanded its job alerts system to help ensure that recruiters at specific companies you're interested in working for are aware of your interest.
LinkedIn's also adding a new dashboard which provides insights on employees at each company, which users will be able to access from a company page. Read more
3. FACEBOOK UPDATES GROUP INVITES, REMOVING THE ABILITY TO AUTOMATICALLY ADD MEMBERS
This is a biggy! If you have been experiencing issues within groups, then this is why! It can be annoying to be added into a group and to have your News Feed invaded by random updates from discussions that you may actually have little to no interest in. This new change will affect some group member counts. If you've invited a heap of people to join your Facebook group, and you haven't seen those people active in your community, you could see your numbers decline. Read more
4. IS SNAPCHAT STRUGGLING?
SnapChat is reportedly having some internal issues. The HR Cheif was asked to leave following an internal investigation last year and that had led to the firing of its global security head. Are the cracks starting to appear? Will Facebook win this war? Only time will tell.
5. FACEBOOK TESTS NEW OPTION TO SHARE EVENTS WITHIN STORIES
The new function - which is being tested in the US, Mexico and Brazil - will appear on the event page itself. When you tap on the 'Share to Story' option (within the share options for an event), you'll be able to create a dedicated Stories frame, with an event sticker, as shown in the second image above. I love this idea!
TOOL OF THE WEEK
With Stories Creator, a desktop browser-based tool from Buffer, you can create content for Facebook or Instagram Stories in batches.
Stories Creator is free and available via any desktop computer with a web browser. https://buffer.com/stories-creator

LATEST NEWS: INSTAGRAM INTRODUCE THE ABILITY TO POST TO MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS
Friday Jan 18, 2019

INSTAGRAM INTRODUCE THE ABILITY TO POST TO MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS
In my opinion, I think this is a backwards step for Instagram. It will be too tempting to post the same content to multiple accounts. It is highly likely that some of your followers will follow your other accounts, therefore they will see the same content over and over. #NotGood for the user.
YOUTUBE REMOVE THE ABILITY TO AUTO-TWEET VIDEOS
As of January 31st, YouTube creators will no longer be able to set up automated posts to Twitter. I am not sure if this is a YouTube decision or a Twitter decision, but either way, I think it is probably a good thing. Less automation on Twitter is always a good thing.
GOOGLE CHROME'S AD-BLOCKER WILL COME INTO EFFECT IN JULY 2019
This shows how forward-thinking Google is. Rather than let broader ad blockers rule the way forward, Google decided to create its own blocker, which would stop showing ads - including those owned or served by Google - on websites which were not compliant with the Better Ads Standards! Way to go Google!
TWITTER UPGRADED THE SCHEDULING FEATURE ON TWEETDECK
As YouTube remove the ability to automatically post your videos to Twitter, Tweetdeck (owned by Twitter) announced the ability to schedule videos and multiple images to the platform. Are Twitter finally investing in the platform? I am wondering if Twitter will revoke the "scheduling" API from other platforms such as Hootsuite etc in the future?
FACEBOOK TACKLE FAKE NEWS IN THE UK WITH NEW FACT-FIND SERVICE
Facebook is partnering up with Full Fact, a British charitable organization that focuses on fact-checking, to get rid of fake news in the UK, the company announced Friday. This is a continuation of Facebook's efforts to combat fake news, which the company ramped up after the 2016 election, but it's the first time the company has launched such an initiative in the UK.
Tool of the week - Juicer
Do you run networking events, training days or expos? If so then this new tool may just be what you are looking for? The posh name for this service is a "Social Media Aggregator", but we like to call it a "Social Media Wall". FACEBOOK OPTIMAL POSTING PRACTICES | TWITTER TOGGLE BUTTON AND MUCH MORE.
Thursday Jan 10, 2019
Thursday Jan 10, 2019
There is not that much news about at the moment. The main social media websites are full of trends and predictions for the forthcoming year, however, we do have new developments on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
Are you looking to become more productive in 2019? If so, then check out this week's tool of the week, which is one of the best task managers/to-do list apps that I have used in a long time.
NEW REPORT LOOKS AT OPTIMAL FACEBOOK POSTING PRACTICES FOR 2019
In this latest article from Buzzsumo, it is interesting to see what types of posts are now working best. A video is by far the best, at 2-3 mins, followed by questions. Read more here.
LINKEDIN IMPROVE HELP LISTINGS BY ADDING CONTEXTUAL PROMPTS
LinkedIn has updated its Help Center tools to make them more contextually relevant, enabling users to connect with the right assistance faster and without having to go into a separate section of the platform. Read the article here.
GOOGLE OUTLINE THE LAUNCH OF GOOGLE LENS
Visual search is a key trend of the future and one which is likely to change the way we discover and purchase relevant products. Snapchat's been talking about this for years, Pinterest is developing its visual search capacity, and Facebook too is working on image-based solutions to help users find exactly what they're after. But no platform has more invested in search than Google, which is why the development of its visual search tools is so important.
INSTAGRAM ADDS NEW MUSIC SHARING OPTION
Facebook has found yet another way to utilize it's music licensing agreements, with a new Instagram Stories option that enables users to share songs with friends via the question sticker.
TWITTER HAS A NEW TOGGLE BUTTON CALLED "SPARKLE"
This is excellent news and it is now available for all users. Click on the new sparkle button on the top right on iOS to see your latest tweets. #LoveThis!
FACEBOOK HAS NEW CAMERA TOOLS FOR MESSENGER
Did you know that you can now have an excellent selfie mode, boomerang mode and also automated AG generated stickers to Facebook messenger? Have you used these yet? Read the article here.
Tool of the week - Tick Tick
If you are managing different companies, then your to-do list can get a bit complicated. I have been testing out "Tick Tick" which is a Google Chrome Extension, a desktop app and it is also available as an app on your phone. It integrates with your diary system, and you can separate your different areas of interest with smart lists.
If you are looking to get organised for 2019, then check it out.
