YOU CAN NOW SHARE YOUR FACEBOOK COLLECTIONS WITH FRIENDS
Do you use the "save" feature on Facebook? Perhaps you have saved things on Facebook into a collection called "Christmas Gift Ideas" - well, now you can just share this collection with your friends - just like Pinterest. Perfect timing for the festive season!
YOUTUBE ANNOUNCED AN AUTOPLAY VIDEO UPDATE
Last Monday, YouTube announced a significant change to its mobile app – it will now autoplay videos(but silent) by default when users are browsing the app’s home page, aka the “Home” tab. I like this update. It would have been annoying if there was sound, but silent autoplay is a great idea!
FACEBOOK BUSINESS MANAGER HAS TWO NEW FEATURES
I spotted this on Twitter via @mattnavarra (he is worth following as he always spots new stuff!). Facebook's Business Manager has two NEW features
1. Assign Permissions By Task
2. Quick Action Buttons
Check out his tweet here.
TWITTER SHARED THE MOST TWEETED TOPICS FOR 2018
Last week, Twitter has shared its annual round-up of the most tweeted about topics, politicians, celebrities and more, providing a range of insights into the key trends of the year, and what's of most interest to Twitter users. The results were not surprising with Mr Trump being the most tweeted politician! It is worth a look... read here
APPLE REVEALED THE MOST DOWNLOADED APPS OF 2018
Apple has this week reported its list of the most downloaded apps of 2018, with YouTube coming out on top, followed by Instagram, Snapchat, Messenger and Facebook. In all honesty, I was pleasantly surprised to see that social media apps were at the top - I was expecting it to be games. A fascinating report.
GOOGLE INTRODUCES NEW FREE DIGITAL LEARNING COURSES
Google has announced a range of additions to the free courses it offers as part of its Google Digital Garage education initiative, while it's also added official certification to help add additional weight to the training.
SKYPE ADDS AUTO-SUBTITLES TO CALLS
I can't wait to have a play with this new Skype call feature. I have never had success with any automated subtitles software or transcription service, or even Siri - they never understand me. I will let you know how I get on! Read how to activate the service as a default here.
Tool of the week - Kapwing
Credit to Social Media Examiner / Erik Fisher for this tool. Kapwing is a desktop video editing software and similar to QuikPro / Magisto and other tools that I have mentioned in the past, with one difference - it has built-in templates for Instagram Stories. The templates merge video and images, with text and frames. It is wicked! Free of charge, with an option to upgrade if you want the Kapwing logo removed. Download here.

FACEBOOK LET GROUP MEMBERS KNOW WHY THEIR POST WAS REMOVED
This is an interesting and handy feature that Facebook is rolling out to Groups. Group admins will soon have the ability to let people know the reasons why they have removed a post from the feed. I love this idea and it will certainly put people off spamming the groups (perhaps LinkedIn should do something similar?)
INSTAGRAM ARE BECOMING MORE ACCESSIBLE
Instagram is adding two new accessibility feature to help visually-impaired users access the photos and videos shared on the platform.
- Automatic alt text
- Custom alt text
Read Instagrams blog here.
YOUTUBE INTRODUCE STORIES FOR EVERYONE (WITH 10K + SUBSCRIBERS)
I am struggling to get 1000 subscribers to my YouTube Channel let alone 10k! But if you do have that volume of subscribers then you are able to add SnapChat style "stories", known as "Community posts" on YouTube. It seems that everyone is jumping on the story bandwagon! Read more
YOUTUBE IS REMOVING ANNOTATIONS
YouTube annotations will finally disappear for good on January 15th, 2019. After this date, “all existing annotations will be removed.” An annotation is a label that appears in videos that link to other videos. Apparently, nobody ever clicked on them. Annotations... you are the weakest link. Bye-bye. Read more
LINKEDIN REVAMPING THE SHARE BOX
LinkedIn is in the process of rolling out a revamped share box, with completion expected in the coming weeks. The new Share box makes it easier for users to select the audience for each of their posts: publicly, connections only, or to specific groups. (This is similar to the way Facebook’s sharing dialogue works for posts.) Read more
LINKEDIN ADDS A LOCATION SHARING FEATURE
LinkedIn has announced a new addition to its messaging functionality which enables users to share their location, or a location nearby, to meet up. Read more
Tool of the week - IG:dm

- Search for users and start a conversation
- View a list of users that are not following you back

Keep The Machine Running
Tuesday Jun 30, 2015
Tuesday Jun 30, 2015
I think that there is little doubt that running a business can be in many respects a more challenging way of earning a living than working for someone else, but as those of us that take this path know it has the potential to produce many rewards not available to us in corporate life.
It’s not just the potential financial rewards that we see in our mind when we take the leap of faith to go out on our own, it’s the ability to go to the school assembly and sports day, to take the day for a family event, take our holidays to suit our needs, drive the car of our choice, and to design our life as we wish it to be by being in charge of our own time and destiny.

How to be the best leader to work for
Tuesday Jun 23, 2015
Tuesday Jun 23, 2015
This month, I have the pleasure of attending an event called ‘How To Be The Number 1 Recruiter To Work For.’ It’s an annual conference and always a popular event – and why wouldn’t it be when the title promises so much! Who could resist?
It started my brain whirring though, particularly with this Green Umbrella blog in mind. Maybe you’re not a recruiter but I wondered if the ingredients for being the best leader or business to work for are still the same? In my opinion as Managing Director of ISV Software and a performance coach, yes they are, at least there are certainly aspects which are transferable.
So here are some of my top tips on how to be the best in your field to work with and to work for. Plus these are actually really useful marketing tips for your business too!

Monday Jun 08, 2015
Vicky Boulton, Marketing Consultant for Fuel, talks about the importance of having good customer service skills in your business.
Many organisations assume that their main marketing goal is to woo new customers to their business. But keeping your existing customers is just as important as acquiring new customers, as well as being cheaper and easier of course.

I've Been Lazy!
Friday Jun 05, 2015
Friday Jun 05, 2015
Yes, I admit it! I’ve been extremely lazy in 2015.
Do you know that I now have 40+ guest bloggers who contribute to the Green Umbrella blog? It’s like a well-oiled machine. They produce the content along with the audio. We then “top and tail” that content and upload it to our website twice a week. That’s great news for me as I have other people doing the hard work of producing the much-needed content for my website. It’s also good news for the guest bloggers as they have exposure to a large network.
Downloads have decreased in the last two months.
76,000+ downloads on the Online Marketing Audio Blog podcast is nothing to be sniffed at. However, I have noticed a significant decreased in the number of downloads per episode in the last two months. Enough for me to sit back and look at my blogging strategy. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve just rested on my laurels and let other people do the hard work.
My audience is mainly interested in online marketing and social media. We are the experts in social media, however, I have only written a handful of social media related blog articles since January – why is that?
Struggling for time!
Like many business owners, I have struggled to find the time to sit down and write my articles. I have even struggled to produce the top and tail audios for the guest bloggers and on occasion I have missed my deadlines. I can make all the excuses in the world, but the bottom line is that the blog is important if I want our business to be successful. I can not turn a blind eye to the stats. I need to address this issue, sooner rather than later!
The solution for producing more relevant content.
I sat down with a pen and paper (yes, no geeky gadgets!) and started to brainstorm how I was going to achieve the results that I needed. These are some of the suggestions:-
- Source guest bloggers who could provide social media related content.
- I provide a video each week for the social media coaching club as an education slot, which could be uploaded as a blog (but no audio). (But that is fairly lazy and my audience can always find this content over on YouTube anyway)
- I could block time in my diary each week to create this week’s blog. (But as it is only one blog then I will always find more important things to do!).
- I could block one day a month to produce good quality social media related blogs for the forthcoming month.
Work Smarter, Not Harder!
In the end, I have opted for number 4. I have experimented with the number of actual blogs that I need to produce each week for optimum results, and two seems to be the sweet spot for Green Umbrella (It’s different for each business).
So I decided that I will produce a guest blog (off topic) once a week and a social media / online marketing related blog once a week. The “Tool of the Day” is very popular, so I will keep this going.
I have allocated a full day in my diary for the next three months where I will batch:-
a) Four x Social Media / Online Marketing blogs – with podcasts / Tool of the day
b) Four x guest blogs – and I will record the blogs and tools of the day on the same day.
c) I have also scheduled time in my diary to upload this content to the LinkedIn Publisher feature, which I am terrible at keeping updated!
d) This will also give me time for my colleague to proofread the articles before I click publish.
Moral of the story
The definition of insanity is to do the same thing, over and over again and expect different results.
One of the main keys to success is to keep an eye on your numbers!
If you see a decreased in any aspect of your business, whether that is traffic to your site, number of likes on your Facebook page or a decreased in your cashflow, then you need to change your process.
Please do not keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results! Don’t be afraid of change, or admit to yourself that something is not working!

How To Avoid Common Computer Problems
Tuesday May 19, 2015
Tuesday May 19, 2015
A large proportion of our work is setting up new computers, repairing hardware failures, upgrading hardware and software, making computers, phones, tablets all talk to each other and extending wireless networks. This is interesting work that also brings great benefits to our clients. However, some of our work is picking up the pieces after a problem has occurred that could so easily have been avoided if the customer had been given a little more information of the issues. The aim of this article is to raise your awareness of some of the more common pitfalls and how they can be avoided.
